Even though the Houston native
won the U.S. Kids world title with
rounds of 70-71 at the age of 10
and later at ages 11 and 12, he
wasn’t really on the national radar
until 2006, when he won three times
on the AJGA tour. Then, in 2007,
he went on a tear in the U.S. Junior
to become the first Texan to win
since 2000.
Whitsett easily won his first two
matches. That moved him to the
Round of 16, where he faced
Korean standout Seung Yul Noh,
who had earned medalist honors
with rounds of 69-67. Whitsett had
to get up and down from the hay
behind the 18th green to win.
Whitsett won his quarterfinal over Chris Cho, 1 up in 19 holes.
That set up a semifinal against Wesley Graham. Whitsett won the first
