La OMS pide más esfuerzos en seguridad vial a los Estados (AFP) – hace 12 horas GINEBRA — La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) mostró su preocupación en un informe por los escasos esfuerzos de los Estados en materia de seguridad vial, al estimar que solo 28 países (el 7% de la población mundial) poseen una legislación adecuada para luchar contra un fenómeno que causa más de un millón de muertos por año. En 2010, los accidentes de carretera causaron 1,24 millones de muertos en el mundo, una cifra similar a la registrada en 2007, según el informe. Solo 88 Estados fueron capaces de reducir este número que, en cambio, aumentó en 87 países. "El número de muertos en carretera sigue siendo muy elevado", estimó Etienne Krug, responsable del departamento para la prevención de accidentes de la OMS. Press Release Paris, 22 July 2009 Road Safety Improved in 2008 After a slowdown in the pace of improvement in road safety in 2007, road fatalities in most countries for which data are available show a large reduction in 2008 compared to the previous year (see Table 1 and Figure 1). A number of countries recorded further sharp decreases in road fatalities in the first quarter of 2009 (see Table 2). This reflects both improved road safety interventions in many countries and the economic downturn, which has depressed traffic volumes in some countries. Comprehensive analysis of 2008 crash data will not be complete for some time. It is therefore too soon to draw firm conclusions on the effectiveness of recent legislative changes and more focused enforcement strategies that have targeted high-risk driving behaviour in some countries. Trends over a somewhat longer timeframe are more relevant to policy analysis. Table 1 and Figure 2 show developments decade by decade since 1970. It can

A Comisión Europea Comunicado de prensa Bruselas, 13 de julio de 2012 Seguridad vial: normas de inspección de vehículos más estrictas para salvar vidas La inspección de los vehículos es fundamental para la seguridad vial. Teniendo en cuenta que cada día mueren en las carreteras europeas más de cinco personas en accidentes causados por fallos técnicos, la Comisión Europea ha adoptado hoy nuevas normas para reforzar el régimen de inspecciones y ampliar su alcance. Los fallos técnicos contribuyen de forma decisiva a los accidentes: a ellos se debe el 6 % del total de accidentes de automóvil, lo que representa anualmente 2 000 víctimas mortales y un número muy superior de heridos. Esa proporción se eleva al 8 % en el caso de los accidentes de moto. El principal problema es que en las carreteras hay demasiados vehículos con fallos técnicos. Algunos estudios realizados recientemente en el Reino Unido y en Alemania indican que hasta el 10 % de los automóviles sufren en cualquier momento

PRESS RELEASE Paris, 22 September 2009 Asia Needs to Act on Road Crashes 4th International IRTAD Conference on Road Safety: Seoul, 16-17 September 2009 “Crashes result in an unacceptable burden of deaths and serious injuries on the roads in all countries”, said Jack Short, Secretary General of the International Transport Forum, explaining the purpose of the 4th IRTAD Conference in Seoul on safety data collection and analysis. “In Asia over 2000 people die on the road every day, accounting for 60% of casualties at global level. It is essential that all governments in the region treat the issue as a major policy priority”. The conference brought together 120 leading safety experts from 33 countries to discuss targets for reducing the death toll. Effective targets require a long-term vision, to eliminate deaths and injuries, supported by interim targets that are both ambitious and realistic. US recorded its lowest death toll on the roads for more than sixty years in 2009. Motorcycle fatalities fell, but less than overall road deaths – some countries registered dramatic increases of 100% and more over 2000-2009 period. PRESS RELEASE Paris/Leipzig, 2 May 2012 Road Deaths: Latest traffic safety data released Drop in road fatalities accelerated in 2010, developments less positive in 2011 The IRTAD Road Safety Annual Report 2011 has been released by the International Transport Forum at the OECD. The report analyses the road safety performance of 32 countries in 2010 and also includes the latest provisional data for 2011. The report was prepared by the Forum’s International Traffic Safety Data and Analysis Group (IRTAD)*. Background Worldwide, at least 1. 3 million people were killed in road crashes in 2010; 50 million people were injured. Nine out of ten victims were in low and middle-income countries. High income countries are generally looking back on a decade with record reductions in road fatalities. Emerging countries undergoing rapid motorisation, however, currently see the number of traffic casualties increasing year after year. The United Nations launched a “Decade of Action for Road Safet
