renda Daugherty was playing golf with her friend Leslie Smith when the doctor called with terrible news. “You have a brain tumor,” the doctor said. “OK, thank you,” Daugherty responded and told the doctor she preferred to get into MD Anderson Cancer Center for treatment. Then she handed the phone to Smith, an operating room nurse who set up the MRi scan a couple days earlier. While Smith gathered more details, Daugherty stepped out of the golf cart. She grabbed her driver and walked to the next tee box. Smith covered the phone with a hand and called after her friend. “What the hell are you doing?!” “i’m going to tee off,” Daugherty said. “Hello, the doctor just told you that you have a brain tumor!” “Well, OK. it is what it is,” Daugherty said. “We’ll deal with it when we deal with it. ” Smith looked at her friend with a blank stare. “Hey, we paid for the golf,” Daugherty said. “We might as well play. grew up among one of the game’s greatest instructors, Dick Harmon. I started working with Mr. Harmon around 1999 at River Oaks. You could say that at 10 years old I didn’t understand the company I was around. To me, Mr. Harmon was simply, “Dickie. ” Every week, my folks would drive me the 45 minutes from Spring down to River Oaks, where I was always excited to see my friend. That’s what Dickie and I were: buddies, partners, friends, who shared a common love for golf. I never looked at a lesson with Dickie as work. It was always fun. We played games, competed, talked golf. Most people may not know that Dickie loved birds, and we never crossed a species he couldn’t name. Once he gave me a national Geographic book on every type of bird around the world. Then he routinely quizzed me on the birds around the golf course. n this most serious of endeavors called golf, every once in a while we’re offered proof that life is more important than sport. Steve Gilley provided the most recent example. in his 16 years as a mini-tour player, the 40-year-old from The Woodlands has an impressive list of accomplishments. He shot a record-setting 55 in a practice round for a U. S. Open qualifier. Only two other pros have shot 55, and one of them is Texas Golf Hall of Famer Homero Blancas. it was 2004 on a par-71 course in Virginia. Gilley eagled the 10th hole and birdied in from there to shoot 25 on the back nine. He once shot a 60 on the same course as a teenager. You get it: the man can play. He’s won 25 mini-tour events and owns 20 course records. But none of it quite compares to what he did earlier this year. Just 45 days after suffering a stroke, he advanced through local qualifying for the U. S. Open with a 3-under 69 at Miramont Country Club in Bryan. Catch that? He had a stroke and a month and a

Golf in this country is a $76 billion industry that employs more than two million people. Those numbers are in danger of declining—along with the amounts of golfing options available—if the current trend of diminishing golf participation continues. McKnight left an army of friends, family and journalism protégées to mourn his passing. he was president of the Texas Daily newspaper Association, served three times on the Pulitzer Prize jury, editor, co-publisher then vice-chairman of the Dallas Times Herald. Before that, he was managing editor and executive editor of the Dallas Morning News. That would have kept most men fairly busy, but McKnight also served on many charitable committees and boards, including the Dallas Salesmanship Club and Dallas golf Association. he knew the business of publishing newspapers, but also what was required in following a good story to its conclusion. in the words of Texas golf writer Dan Jenkins, who knows a thing or two about journalism, “Felix loved good writers and could spo
