eDiTOR’S nOTe: Shortly after Darrell K. Royal died on Nov. 6, Texas Golf Hall of Fame historian Frances Trimble emailed us this story she wrote about DKR in the July-August 1987 edition of Senior Golfer. Although known for leading the Longhorns to two national football championships, Royal was just like most amateur golfers: He did one thing for a living, but golf and competition were his passions. With Fran’s permission, and in Royal’s memory, we are reprising her story here. s a skinny, freckle-faced youth in Hollis, Okla. , Darrell Royal tried to outrun cars and dogs. He had an instinct for creating contests out of thin air and making them look like fun. a Darrell K. Royal IN MEMORIAM Jump ahead to 1985: it is a windy, bone-chilling day in Texas. The former coach is playing in a golf fundraiser. Birdies are scarce for Royal’s team. The nasty weather seems to matter more than the sport. The team consists of a collegiate golfer (vintage 1958), an all-america tackle (vintag

TexasLinksmagazines. com andra Haynie walks over to the practice tee at the WinStar Golf Academy where an employee is hitting balls. As soon as the 66-year-old Hall of Famer reaches the range, things start going awry. Frustration begins to mount, and then Haynie starts talking. A casual comment here, an observation there. If you didn’t know Haynie was an instructor at the academy, you might think this was a nothing more than a conversation between friends. You can’t perceive the change, but the employee’s swing becomes a little more fluid, more natural looking. The wind is howling, but the ball begins to fly straight and true. As the pair heads back inside to the academy offices, the employeeturned-student shakes her head. “It’s crazy how she does it,” she said. “Not once did you see her come over to me and put her arms on me

His older brothers, Buster and Bobby, won their share of barbecue tournaments during the ’40s and ’50s. David was the fifth of the eight brothers and came to Atlanta. He was tragically injured in a hunting accident in the mid-1980s and lived some 20 years confined to a wheelchair before dying in 2007. At Druid Hills Golf Club that day, David was watching Chris play. Although Chris did not have a good final round, he still finished in the top 10 against his younger opponents. Chris played college golf at the University of Virginia and had tour potential, but like his Uncle Buster, opted for a more sedate life off of the road and running a golf course. Buster, the third-oldest of the Cupit brothers, has run the Longview Country Club for 40 years. Chris remembers a funny conversation between the two about 10 years ago. “I was talking with Buster and he mentioned that he had recently shot his age, so I thought he might have had a 69 or something,” Chris said.

He had the game to make national noise. But he never got the chance. While training for the Air Force after college he was killed in a training exercise. Had he lived, he certainly would’ve turned pro. But in the 1950s there was no Texas amateur better than Morris Williams, Jr. in Austin. Even at a tender age he was capable of beating the best adult amateurs in the state. He will always be remembered for winning the “Texas Slam. ” That’s what spo

ou won’t find Ed White’s name in many books. Most works on Texas golf history omit him. Maybe in any other state he would be more notable, but not one that gave golf Hogan, Nelson, Demaret and countless others. But one author did feel the need to note him: Harvey Penick. In his Little Red Book, Penick listed White as one of his best students ever, right next to a couple of guys named Crenshaw and Kite. Ed White was one of the most promising amateur talents in the country after winning the 1935 intercollegiate golf championship for the University of Texas. He had the talent to become the next great golf star. But after graduating during the Great Depression, Ed White fell off the national radar screen, rarely ever competing in even statewide tournament for the rest of his life. What happened to him? White was content to live his life and raise a family in the bustling boomtown that was Houston. Along the way he became one of the best amateur golfers
