Calhoun County residents,
along with city residents in
Hampton, Harrell, Thornton and
Tinsman will be going to the
polls on Tuesday, March 11 to
decide if they will support the
request for a 1 percent sales tax
(1 cent per dollar) increase on
purchases in the county.
At the request of Calhoun
County Judge Floyd Nutt, the
Quorum Court members made
the decision in December to
put the initiative on the ballot in
March after months of discussions along with cutting out
several items from the overall
2014 budget.
Nutt told the Sun on Tuesday that the county has been
borrowing money since before
he was elected to office.
He said that in 2003, his first
year in office, the county treasurer at the time, Kristi Newton
Branch, came to him in May
and said that the county general
fund needed money and asked
him if they could borrow money
