On Tuesday morning, two
F-16 fighter jets of the
Royal Netherlands Air
Force intercepted two
Russian strategic bombers.
The Dutch defence
ministry acknowledged that the F16s, which are assigned to the Quick Reaction Alert
squadron stationed at Volkel air base, took off at 11:15 am (local time) to intercept
the Tupolev Tu-95 “Bears.
” The propeller-driven Bear bomber is a venerable fivedecade-old aircraft that still serves as a dangerous cruise missile platform.
The Dutch jets were assisted by German military air controllers.
Earlier, the Danish air
force also scrambled fighters to escort the Russians planes.
