Finding, Gathering, Saving Seeds Continuing the Cycle of Life For most of human history, people needed to save and replant seeds in order to survive. Seeds from favorite plants were saved from year to year and generation to generation. When people emigrated to new parts of the world, they brought with them seeds from plants with qualities they valued: the tastiest tomatoes, longest beans, or squash that withstood cold temperatures, for instance. As fall weather spells changes in many schoolyards, consider encouraging your students to become savvy seed savers by identifying and gathering their own gems from the garden or wild. Why bother? Saving seeds can be economical (you might generate hundreds from just one plant) and inspire students to explore, firsthand, plants life cycles and clever adaptations for housing and dispersing seeds. Your young growers can cultivate connections with others by packaging their unique s

1 Because few sights are as spectacular as a field of wildflowers, many gardeners wish to include them in their home gardens. Wildflowers are admired for their combination of beauty and self-sufficiency. However, the most common misconception about wildflower gardening is that it is maintenance-free. Like any garden, a wildflower area will take some work. Once established, maintenance will diminish greatly but normal weeding, tilling and watering will make the garden successful. For some, the idea of having a strictly “wildflower” garden has been expanded to include a more integrated planting of flowers and shrubs, including as many native plantings as possible. Wildflowers should be mixed into your garden along with other selected perennials, bulbs, herbs, and flowering shrubs. Planting wildflowers alone will show a dominance of annuals the first year with the more persistent perennials settling into dominance. Retaining diversity will require a bit of work but your efforts wi

Seed Saving Information Prepared by Marisha Auerbach queenbee@herbnwisdom. com www. herbnwisdom. com All seeds are best preserved under cool and dry storage. Refrigeration is often recommended for long-term storage. If you have a barrier (such as woods, tree lines, or buildings) in between varieties of similar crops, you can shorten the distance needed to avoid cross-pollination of different varieties. Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris): Self-pollinated. Beans do not readily cross between varieties so no need to separate varieties by more than a few feet. The pods are papery and dry when harvested. Pull up the entire plant lay on a tarp in a dry place. The plants can then be threshed by jumping on them. Use a ½" screen on top of a ¼" screen to clean the seed. Bean seed can remain viable for 4 years. Beets (Beta vulgaris): Wind pollinated biennial. Different beet varieties must be isolated by ¼ mile. Beets can cross-pollinate with Chard, be aware of these distances as well. Seeds a

A Guide to SeedSaving,SeedStewardship & Seed Sovereignty By The Seed Ambassadors Project 2nd edition August 2008 If SEED SAVING is collecting seeds for replanting in the future… Then SEED STEWARDSHIP is the process of saving seeds with the purpose of maintaining or improving that seed’s health and resilience. It also includes the act of saving and selecting a variety over a period of many seasons, with the end goal of passing it on to others in the future. The ideal of SEED SOVEREIGNTY firmly plants seed saving and seed stewardship in the realm of fundamental human rights. It is the freedom to save seed and determine the foundation on which our food system rests. With the current attacks of industry hitting at the heart of food sovereignty, the simple act of seed saving becomes a major act of resistance and social empowerment. TheFarmers Handbook-"NearTheHouse1",Chapter8-SeedSaving What is Farmers need to have many skills to manage both the soil and the homestead. Out of those skills, seed saving is probably one of the most important. By giving more attention to seed saving, farmers can improve the quality of their seed each year. This can then improve crop production. This can be done without having to increase inputs of fertilizer, irrigation or cultivation. So with a little extra care in seed production, farmers can easily increase their farm production. Although this chapter mainly uses examples of vegetable seed production, the principles it describes are relevant to any species whose seed we want to save. Seed Saving ?Seed Saving ? Agriculture and Natural Resources FSA6024 Plant Propagation for Home Gardeners James A. Robbins Professor and Horticulture Specialist Ornamentals Arkansas Is Our Campus Visit our web site at: http://www. uaex. edu Many home gardeners wish to reproduce special plants in their land scapes or start their own vegetable and bedding plants. Plant propagation is the controlled reproduction of plants using a variety of methods. These methods can be broadly grouped into sexual and asexual (vegetative) methods. Sexual propa gation is focused primarily on propagating plants by seed. Seed propagation offers some advantages in that the technique is often economical and efficient and lends itself to longterm storage. The primary disadvan tage of seed propagation is that many seeds do not come “true to type,” so the offspring are not exact copies of the parent. Asexual propagation tech niques include cuttings (e. g. , root, stem, leaf), budding or grafting, layer ing and division.
