Lenten Sacrifices - Sabra Ciancanelli Sacrifice has developed a negative connotation in our culture. Here’s why it’s important. My son Henry awoke terrified from a nightmare. Tears streamed down his face as he begged me to join him in the top bunk. I tried to convince him to come to my bed, but he shook his head and pointed to the dozen stuffed animals around him. Not wanting to wake up his brother in the bottom bunk and hoping Henry might fall fast asleep, I climbed up the ladder and lay beside him. “I love you, Mommy,” he said. It must have been a little after three in the morning. Somewhere between contorting my legs around a large stuffed dinosaur and praying that Henry would fall asleep, I began to think about self-denial. Initially I was reflecting on the sleep I was giving up but then my thoughts wandered to Lenten sacrifices. “What are you giving up for Lent?” people ask this time of year. The responses usually range from giving up coffee or chocolate to avoiding gos

The Lap of God - by Oleeta J. Takao A little gray kitten taught me a valuable lesson on drawing closer to God. I used to have trouble keeping my mind from wandering and from worrying about my problems during my morning meditations. No matter how hard I tried my quiet time would have stressful moments where I couldn t feel God s comfort. Then one day when I was feeling restless and cranky I heard our silver kitten crying at my feet. I tried to pick him up and put him in my lap where I could soothe him, but he would have none of it. He shrieked and scratched, then squirmed from my grasp. I was annoyed. Doesn t he see, I thought, that I want to comfort him? Then a small voice seemed to answer: It s like you and God. He wants to hold you to comfort you, but sometimes you are so frantic that He cannot. After that, I decided to try a little exercise during my daily prayer time. I began envisioning myself crawling up into God s lap. As I snuggled close to Him, I felt His strong ar

A Mother s Prayer Is Answered by a Special Friendship - by Carol Trimmer An autistic child finds his first true comrade in a very unlikely setting. The school bus stopped at the corner to drop off my 11-year-old son. I watched from our front window, praying he’d had one of his good days. But even before the bus doors hissed open, I heard Justin screaming. Oh, Lord, what’s happened now? I thought, flinging open our door. He ran toward the house hunched over, his head down so I couldn’t see his face—only the hair on top of his head. He was shaking his arms and swinging his lunchbox like a club. In a lot of ways, Justin was a typical fourth grader. He went to a public school. He liked music and swimming, played Little League baseball, excelled at board games and loved animals. But he also had autism, a brain development disorder that could sometimes make him hard to be around. Justin barged past me, ripped off his backpack and threw himself on the living room floor, screaming,

On the Road - Jay Loecken This family sold everything they owned in order to help others. I steered our RV out of the campground in Rancho Cucamonga, California—home for the last two months for me, my wife, Beth, and our four kids. We’d had a great stay, delivering care packages to the homeless and painting a church on Skid Row in downtown LA. Four years ago, living in our big house in the Atlanta suburbs, I could never have imagined this being our life. But then so much had changed since that fall afternoon we ventured under a bridge below I75… I gripped my son Noah’s hand tight as we made our way down the steep embankment that day, the roar of traffic above us. What was I doing bringing a five-year-old down here? Or the rest of my family, for that matter? Behind me, Beth held on to nine-year-old Abigail. Bekah, 11, and Ben, 13, followed close behind. We’d come to work with a nonprofit called 7 Bridges to Recovery to distribute care packages to the homeless. I was hoping it mi

Guided by Heaven s Hand to Make a Difference - by Lou Zywicki Prudhomme A reunion with a once-troubled former student helps a teacher deal with her grief. I published an article in Guideposts magazine a little over six years ago: Sarah’s Story, about a troubled eleventh grader in the English class I taught at a vocational high school in Duluth, Minnesota. Sarah was one of the angriest students I had ever taught. But I knew that her anger was simply a defense she’d built up against her deeper feelings of fear and hurt. Sarah had grown up in an abusive home and had then lived on the streets before entering foster care. Even then she remained disruptive and confrontational—with her fellow students and especially with me, whom she saw as just another authority figure who couldn’t be trusted. She seemed to have no interest in her future. I was at a loss. I was proud of my teaching, but I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to reach Sarah. Lord, I’d prayed, help me find the key to Sarah

The Christmas Card List - Susan Sarver She uses her Christmas card list as an inspiration for reviving treasured friendships. Six states and 12 cities. That’s how many I’ve visited in the last few years. I’m not a travel agent either. Just someone who was inspired by, of all things, her Christmas card list. Let me explain. For over 30 years now I’ve been sending letters along with my Christmas cards to family and friends —just little updates on me, my husband Ted and our sons, Matt and Joseph. Some folks are new additions to the list, and others have been there since the beginning. Like Jana. She and I met on my first day at Illinois State University and hit it off. We both came from families with six children and loved pop music and going to the movies. After school we promised to keep in touch—and we did, for a while, short visits here and there. But life got in the way. Still, we never missed sending Christmas cards. Four years ago I didn’t get a card from Jana. I cal

Just a Man - Celeste McCauley We’re all only human, even Joe Paterno. I spent four years of my life as a student at Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania. I worked on the student newspaper, The Daily Collegian, for all those years too. And every Saturday along with thousands I cheered on the Nittany Lions football team led by longtime coach Joe Paterno. I was fortunate to interview him when Penn State won the national championship against Miami and was present at the White House for a ceremony honoring the team. I’ll never forget how humble he was. He always looked more like a professor in his Coke-bottle glasses, suitcoat and tie than a coach. Even if you weren’t a player on his team, you could learn from Paterno. The no-name jerseys the team wore showed selflessness. The millions he and his wife, Sue, donated to the school for the library and liberal arts departments spoke volumes. Education, he said, was more important than a winning score. (Though he did w

The Inspiring True Story Behind Red Tails - Nina Hämmerling A new movie sheds light on the faith, friendship and fortitude of the trailblazing Tuskegee Airmen. Finally, a remarkable chapter in American history is coming to the big screen. Based on the inspiring real-life story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the new movie Red Tails chronicles the struggles and triumphs of the first African-American squadron of aviators in the U. S. military. During World War II, a time when the country was still in the grips of Jim Crow laws, the Tuskegee Airmen fought for the right to fight for their country. In their struggle for respect and equal opportunities in the military, they banded together and supported one another through prayer and their belief in each other. At the time, military policy kept African-American pilots grounded, claiming they “lacked qualifications” to carry out important missions. When the military brass finally relented and allowed them to fly, it paved the way not only for

A Half-Court Miracle - by Jeffrey Troy Would a man see his prayers answered as he heaved a shot from well behind the arc? “These seats are great!” I shouted to my brother Greg over the crowd noise. We were just halfway up the stands with a perfect view of the action at the Philadelphia Spectrum. I’d driven up from Wilmington, Delaware, with my two boys, seven-year-old Matt and five-year-old Winston, to see my alma mater, University of Rhode Island, play Temple in the deciding game of the Atlantic 10 College Basketball Tournament. The winner would go to the NCAA tournament, aka March Madness. I was pumped. I never played college ball, but I’m a huge fan. These kids make shots on the court I couldn’t even make in my dreams. Amazing. The first half was full of thrills. Then, at halftime, an official-looking man approached our row. “Excuse me, sir,” he said to me, “how would you like to participate in an on-court contest?” I looked at Greg, puzzled. “Go ahead,” he said. “I’ll w

No Solutions, Please; Just Listen - Rick Hamlin A loving spouse learns that sometimes the best thing to do is to quietly care. My wife, Carol Wallace, and I were on vacation in California this past summer, lounging at the beach, when her cell rang. She plucked it out of her bag, looked to see who it was, then answered. She walked off to the water’s edge, talking, listening. The call was important. Ten minutes later she returned, dropped her phone in her bag and went back to the water without a word. She kicked the sand and shook her head. My wife and I both work with words. If you ask me, she has the far tougher job. I work for Guideposts, finding and editing stories for the magazine and writing for our website. Carol works at home, writing books. She’s had over 20 books published, but still hits rough patches and has dealt with disappointments. I waited a moment then went to Carol. “The book’s not doing well,” she said. This was her latest novel, Leaving Van Gogh, about
