Daily Devotion: Jesus Knows Your Pain Devotional writer, Sharon Hinck digs deep in to Scripture to find Jesus comfort and understanding. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Isaiah 53:3 I was recently struck by Isaiah 53:3, which talks about Jesus being "acquainted with grief" because our family has recently faced the death of a loved one. I’ve also been dealing with the process of getting a little older, and the loss of activities I used to enjoy due to physical limitations. As I pondered the meaning of Jesus being "acquainted with grief", I suddenly felt great comfort in the awareness that He understands. I think, too often, we can overemphasize Jesus’ focus on our happiness or life satisfaction. We pray for help with our debt, a way out of a precarious personal situation or a superficial need. But there is something deeply reassuring about the knowl

The Benefit of Devotion in the Danger Zone Linda (not her real name) leaned forward conspiratorially over her coffee. “Hey, have you heard about Barbara?” she asked. My gossip alarm clamored wildly. I sent up an emergency prayer: Holy Spirit, guard my heart and guide my lips! It was going to be a full 90 minutes before Linda’s daughter and mine emerged from their ballet audition, and the time suddenly stretched out before me like an endless minefield. If there’s one time I pray without ceasing, it’s in the midst of gossip. On the one hand, I don’t want to contribute to or condone negative talk; on the other I don’t want to become a victim of it. The only way I know of to navigate the danger is to pray before each and every time I open my mouth. And I mean every time. Because one little slip-up and I end up in a state of regret, knowing I’ve let Jesus down. I hate situations where I have to be on high alert. Lately, though, I’ve realized that when I know I’m in a spiritual dan

In the years since the loss of Piper, Misti and her husband have suffered greatly. It is as though they’ve been walking through the valley of the shadow of death even as they experienced new joys and the birth of a healthy son, Griffin. In conversations with Misti about faith, I have shared her search for meaning in the midst of her loss. It’s difficult. Nobody but God really knows all of the answers. Something happened the other day, however, which redeems Misti’s situation in a small way. It happened when she heard about a woman who lost her baby at ful

Rest in Jesus Feeling tired? Go to The Source of peace and rest. “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. ” Matthew 11:28 (NAS) Have you ever been bone-tired? I don’t mean just sleepy. I mean drained in your spirit. At the point of exhaustion all the way down into your bones. I’m feeling that way right now. I’ve got a husband, three little kids, extended family, church, a fulltime job and a writing habit. This past week we’ve been practicing for a musical at church and I’m the director. My husband hurt his back and has not felt well. We have a big yard and lots of farm animals to tend. My two oldest kids have had tests in school and several extracurricular activities. We went camping—without my husband—over the weekend, and I did not get much writing done when we got back, as I had planned. Other duties called. My deadline is fast approaching, and I can barely hold my head up. As I ponder how to inspire others, it is clear I need some inspi

Alone with Jesus To be close to Jesus, imitate Him—live as He would in our place and make His spiritual practices ours. "The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases . . . . Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. " Mark 1:33-35 Life gets crowded sometimes. The needs of family (whether our children, our siblings, our parents), the pressures of work, the delicate drama of friendships—all create a pressure on us that can feel overwhelming. Jesus experienced and understood this. His days were full, and He took it in stride when the whole town showed up at His doorstep looking for help and healing. He willingly gave them what they needed. But the next morning, He did something some of us might consider selfish, if we dared to do it ourselves. He escaped from the people and their demands. He walked out (for a little while) on even His closest friends

Pray About the Small Things This devotion reminds us Jesus cares about our problems, no matter how trivial they may seem “When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, ‘Lord, should we strike with our swords?’ And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. But Jesus answered, ‘No more of this!’ And he touched the man’s ear and healed him. ” Luke 22:49– 51 I’ve been struggling with insulin resistance. It means my cells don’t respond to insulin and don’t intake the sugar in my bloodstream into the cells, and so my cells are starving. Poor cells! At first I felt frustrated and alone, because I felt I had to heal my body myself. Granted, it was my terrible diet that caused the insulin resistance in the first place, but I still felt alone. After all, no one else can eat or not eat the right foods for me. As I wallowed in self-pity and tried not to think about chocolate chip cookies, I prayed halfheartedly. Please, Lord, heal me from

A Lesson from My Prayer Shawl Sometimes God gives us not what we desire, but what we need. You didn t choose me! I chose you! John 15:16 When church members were asked to make prayer shawls for the opening worship at our annual conference, the response was overwhelming. There were nearly five hundred shawls—loose-knit pastels, frothy wisps of net, fringed paisley silks and even shawls featuring cowboy scenes. I quickly saw the one I wanted: a black lace mantilla that would look great with my black dress. Only I didn t get to choose. After I took Holy Communion, a youth delegate selected a colorful patchwork of orange, green, brown and lilac diamonds, cable-stitched and fringed in black. As she draped it around my shoulders, the word that came to mind was "sturdy. " At home, I draped the shawl over a chair in my bedroom, thinking I might give it away. Instead, I ve found myself reaching for it each time I have a special worry or concern. I prayed for my grandson Ryan when he cel

Loving Jesus My time with God isn t an obigation, it s a privilege As a writer, I m always looking for things that would be good illustrations or ideas for a book, and lately I’ve tried to bring that attentiveness to my daily life, to notice what God is up to. While working on Morning with Jesus, I realized I can t separate my "devotional life" from my “real” life. It s all connected. As John Ortberg once said, “God is not interested in your ‘spiritual life. ’ He s interested in your life. All of it. He intends to redeem it. ” Jesus is my focus most of the time when I’m in a noticing mood. Even when I m in the midst of making a mistake, I ve trained myself to stay highly aware of him. I really try to bring him to mind throughout the day—to live in a way that I "practice the presence" of Jesus. For many years my quiet times were anything but "quiet"—instead they were noisy with me talking to God. As I ve gotten older they ve become more about listening—to Scripture, to God s vo

Walking with Jesus Tricia Goyer shares her biggest lesson learned writing about her prayer life. One of my favorite things about writing devotions for Mornings with Jesus was sitting down and thinking about my own encounters with Jesus—really taking that time to reflect on my relationship with Him. I began writing or thinking about each devotion by asking myself, "What Scriptures have really impacted my life?” I would write out the Scripture verse, and then jot down experiences I’ve had that are related to that verse. It was a wonderful time of reflection for me as I looked back at the moments in my life and realized how God’s Word has brought understanding and strength to my life, and pushed me to change. Some of the devotions came to me through that reflection process. Others were borne out of my own personal quiet time. As I met Jesus in the morning and read His Word, special Scriptures would stand out. I knew God had a plan for me to include those, too. Since I’m a novelist

Journal Your Way to a Grateful Heart Learn how jotting down your daily blessings can improve your relationship with God. But true praise is a worthy sacrifice; this really honors me. . . . —Psalm 50:23 The personal journal I’ve kept for nearly thirty years began as a challenge. I’d been grumbling about my circumstances, so a friend suggested I write down one thing, every single day, for which I was truly thankful. Even though the first entries were simple, it sometimes took me quite awhile to write, “Thanks, God, for a good night’s sleep” or “I praise You for keeping us safe during the hail storm. ” Later, I began to praise God for answered prayer: “Thank You for Patrick’s finding just the right job . . . for guiding the doctor’s hand during my neighbor’s eye surgery . . . for giving me the right words for today’s speech. ” Gradually the journal became a record of my walk with God. Looking back, I clearly saw His guiding hand, His presence and His leading in every circums
