FOOTPRINTS NEWSLETTER OF THE DERBYSHIRE DALES GROUP OF THE RAMBLERS January 2012 Nick’s Natterings At the recent AGM attended by 36 members (out of a total of 620), the Social Secretary + Minutes Secretary posts were filled. We are still looking for a new Treasurer. This was followed by an interesting talk on “Snow Shoeing” given by one of our members, Michael Hunt, who runs Mountain House Holidays. We were enticed by this novel way of rambling through deep snow and will probably be keen to try it if the bad winter predicted by our weather forecasters comes true. An incident on a recent Thursday walk brought home the fact that we don’t always know much about our fellow ramblers if and when we need to know about their medical condition and/or how to contact their next-of-kin. In the next edition of “Footprints” we aim to include details of information to be recorded on “Personal Information Tags” which we hope each member will complete and will carry whilst out walking. FOOTPRINTS NEWSLETTER OF THE DERBYSHIRE DALES GROUP OF THE RAMBLERS September 2011 Last date for copy for next issue I7th November 2011 With help from other members, I’ve managed to secure talkers for the September to December Friday night social evenings but decisions will soon have to be taken as regards the future of the Social programme for 2012 onwards. Poor attendance on Friday nights (the reason Louis resigned) means we are operating at a loss. We need to hear what the members would like if Friday nights are to continue. Please send your suggestions and comments to the Footprints editor. Out of our 640 membership, we have received just 67 requests to send future copies of Footprints, etc, via email. Teresa at: reunite1@btinternet. com would love to hear from you! For those members who are suffering illnesses, our thoughts are with you and we send our best wishes for a healthy recovery. FOOTPRINTS NEWSLETTER OF THE DERBYSHIRE DALES GROUP OF THE RAMBLERS January 2011 Nick’s Natterings The past 3 months have been a mixture of sad and glad news. Our President Ken Hammond died in August and a dozen of our members attended his funeral. At the Area Get-together on Oct. 17th , we heard that Arthur Osborne had just died. He was a vice-president for the Area and had done lots of work for the Ramblers over the years. On the glad side, the day of that Area Get-together was a brilliant, sunny day with beautiful clear views from Alport Heights. The large number of walkers went off on 3 different length walks but all managed to meet up at the same time for lunch at the Hankin Farm barn! Also on the glad side, congratulations to Rob & Jenny on their recent marriage, which they celebrated, apparently, up north around Settle. Last date for copy for next issue I7th March 2011 The Ramblers 75th Anniversary „baton‟ was nearly dropped when a consignment of them got lost in transit.

Whilst those of you ramblers who remained in Derbyshire basked in the hot sun, Pat and I were battling in the Highlands against heavy rain and 60 mph winds. After a 12 mile walk along the Spey Valley disused railway track, it would have been nice if the „promised‟ bus service had turned up. After walking back several miles along the busy A95, thumbing a lift, we were rescued by a kind lady (a fellow walker) who worked at Ballindalloch Castle. We thanked her the next day with a Bakewell Pudding and a bottle of „Stone Road‟ wine! We visited Jean Hutton (an ex-Birchover rambler) and her dog Bramble, who moved to Fife the two years ago. Jean wished to be remembered to all her old rambling friends. Whilst I was busy with walks in April, my rambling life has been fairly quiet during

Thanks to those who turned up for my sunny New Year’s Day walk and to Pat who provided refreshments afterwards. Only on “Black (Ice) Wednesday” was I stopped from getting out of Birchover. On that day (Jan. 13th ) the walk from Belper resulted in one of our members breaking his ankle. We wish John (Hunt) a speedy recovery and hope he isn’t too frustrated hobbling around the house. Likewise, to those other members (with whom we do keep in touch) who have illnesses, we wish you all the best for the return to good health. I would like to thank Rosemary and Jennifer for all their hard work as Social Secretaries over the past 7 years. I feel the Friday night events, as well as always being e

FOOTPRINTS NEWSLETTER OF THE DERBYSHIRE DALES GROUP OF THE RAMBLERS January 2010 [1] Last date for copy for next issue I7th March 2010 Our New Chairman I joined the Derbyshire Dales Group soon after moving to the area 5 years ago. Along with my wife Pat, I thoroughly enjoy walking with the Group and have led the Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday walks on many occasions. I also enjoy all the Friday Social evenings at the Imperial Rooms where I have presented several of my own slide shows. My main interest is in the actual walking and so, whilst carrying out the Chairman s duties to the best of my abilities, I will try to keep all the relevant meetings, paperwork and any other tasks to a minimum. Some of the Chairman s duties (e. g. , Area Council meetings) have been delegated to other members and certain other duties have been changed or omitted. I am grateful to Frank Ogden for continuing to attend the meetings of the Stanage Forum and the N. T. Advisory Committee. I wish Frank a

Unfortunately, as many of you will know John Stone died in May. You will find an obituary elsewhere in this edition of Footprints but I would like to add my own appreciation of the friendship and support he gave to me. Last December I indicated my wish to resign as Chairman by, at least, 2010. I am delighted to report that we have a volunteer for the post and I shall therefore be resigning at the A. G. M. in November. I still hope to be active with the Group and will be p r e p a r e d t o c o n t i n u e a s representative on other bodies like the Stanage Forum and the National Trust High Peak Advisory Committee if that is what the Group want. With regard to the Stanage Forum, attention switched to the Eastern Moors and it is now almost certain that the management will be under a partnership of the Peak Par
